Vitalik Buterin’s Insights on Zuzalu’s Experiment
Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has highlighted two significant challenges—governance and membership—that need resolution to make his concept of a “popup city” or “network states” feasible.
The Network States Concept
In his presentation at the Network State Conference 2024 in Singapore on Sept. 22, Buterin delved into the idea of “network states.” This concept envisions online communities forming physical communities with the aim of achieving political autonomy.
Zuzalu: An Experimental Community
Buterin’s experiment, Zuzalu, took place in Montenegro from March to May 2023. It gathered 200 individuals from various sectors, including the Ethereum community, crypto leaders, biotech entrepreneurs, and scientific researchers. The objective was to foster collaboration on solving collective problems, such as human longevity.
The Experiment’s Structure and Activities
Participants in Zuzalu engaged in activities that emphasized healthy living, including nutritious eating, cold plunges, and yoga. The experience was well-received, but Buterin noted that it did not clearly indicate the next steps, and key issues like governance remained unresolved.
Governance and Membership Challenges
Buterin stressed that for network states to be viable, they must create their own regulations that serve their citizens while avoiding excessive regulation that can hinder progress. However, he admitted that the Zuzalu experiment did not provide a clear path for implementing these regulations.
The Potential of Popup Cities
According to Buterin, popup cities offer a new medium to explore futuristic ideas. Yet, he emphasized the need for productive relationships between network states to avoid the counterproductive tribalism seen on social media today.
Moving Forward
Buterin concluded that while popup cities have potential, solving governance and membership issues is crucial. He emphasized the importance of cooperation, even among groups with different goals, to move forward effectively.
Network States: A New Frontier
Originally proposed by Balaji Srinivasan and extensively commented on by Buterin in 2022, network states are seen as a possible evolution of libertarianism, blending individualism with community values.
