EigenLayer’s EigenDA, a data availability protocol, has introduced support for native token restaking specifically for layer-2 scaling networks. This new feature complements the existing support for Ether (ETH) and EigenLayer’s native EIGEN token. The primary aim is to enhance the security and yield generation for tokens involved in layer-2 scaling solutions.

What is EigenDA?

EigenDA is a “data availability layer” designed to operate on EigenLayer’s ETH restaking platform. Its main function is to reduce the costs associated with storing and accessing on-chain data for Ethereum’s layer-2 scaling solutions. The protocol aims to provide reliable, scalable, and secure data availability (DA) at a lower cost.

The Importance of Data Availability in Layer-2 Scaling

One of the significant bottlenecks for layer-2 scaling chains has been the high cost of securely storing and accessing transaction data. Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade in March addressed this issue by introducing temporary off-chain data stores called “blobs.” Competing solutions, such as those offered by Celestia, also aim to tackle the same problem.

Restaking Mechanism in EigenDA

Restaking involves using a token that has already been staked as collateral with a validator to secure other protocols simultaneously. This mechanism allows for multiple layers of security and yield generation for the same token. Currently, EigenLayer commands almost $12.75 billion in total value locked (TVL), according to DefiLlama.

Benefits of Native Token Restaking on EigenDA

The introduction of native token restaking on EigenDA allows layer-2 networks to create custom consensus mechanisms, known as “quorums,” for securely storing and accessing data. This feature also expands the range of tokens that can earn yield from restaking. This means that teams can now restake their ERC-20 tokens to secure a custom quorum for their rollup, thereby enhancing security for rollup users and generating token yield for token holders.

EigenDA’s Achievements and Future Prospects

EigenDA was the first “actively validated service” (AVS) launched on EigenLayer and remains the largest. It is secured by approximately 3.6 million restaked ETH and 71.5 million EIGEN, contributed by more than 128,000 stakers. As custom ERC20 token quorums are added to EigenDA, users will soon have the option to support staking other tokens similarly to how they staked ETH and EIGEN tokens.
