Dominance in Ethereum Block Production Raises Centralization Concerns
In October, the Ethereum network saw two block builders, Beaverbuild and Titan Builder, produce nearly 89% of its blocks. This has sparked discussions about potential centralization issues in Ethereum, the world’s second-largest blockchain. Toni Wahrstätter from the Ethereum Foundation highlighted this trend, noting that private order flow, or XOF, is a significant factor. XOF, sold by specific apps, restricts the competitive landscape in block production, leading to fewer diverse transactions.
The Importance of Decentralization in Ethereum

If a few entities control a large portion of transactions, they might prioritize certain ones over others, which contradicts the fundamental principles of blockchain technology. Lee points out that Ethereum’s design separates block proposers and builders, ensuring proposers only select blocks based on profitability without seeing their contents.
Proposer-Builder Model in Ethereum
The proposer-builder separation in Ethereum’s architecture is crucial. It prevents builders from prioritizing specific transactions, thereby maintaining a level of decentralization. Builders and validators can’t choose which transactions to include or exclude, which helps mitigate centralization risks. However, others remain cautious, as powerful validators could exploit maximal extractable value (MEV) incentives to disproportionately affect the network. This could lead to reordering, including, or excluding transactions to maximize profits, undermining decentralization.
Enhancing Censorship Resistance in Ethereum
Concerns about centralization could be addressed by strengthening Ethereum’s censorship resistance. Wahrstätter suggests that if Ethereum had robust guarantees against censorship, the dominance of a few block builders would be less concerning. While Ethereum is working on enhancing its censorship resistance, new challenges related to private order flow and centralization might still arise. Nevertheless, the rise in validators, driven by institutional interest, is a positive sign for Ethereum’s decentralization.
