Bitcoin Core Developer Receives Grant for BIP Repository Maintenance
Grant Awarded to Bitcoin Core Developer Jon Atack
Investment fund Maelstrom has granted financial support to Jon Atack, a senior developer at Bitcoin Core, for his work on maintaining the Bitcoin Improvement Proposals (BIP) repository. Atack, who began contributing to Bitcoin Core in 2019, received a $100,000 grant. He is also supported by another grant from the Bitcoin initiative OpenSats.
Arthur Hayes, Maelstrom’s chief investment officer, stated that the financial support allows Atack to focus entirely on his work on Bitcoin. Hayes emphasized the fund’s goal of supporting veteran Bitcoin Core developers, aiming to identify more candidates for grants to educate the next generation of developers within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
The Importance of Vigilance and Updates for Bitcoin
In the announcement, Atack emphasized that open-source software and Bitcoin are crucial for human freedom, decentralization of power, individual privacy, and self-sovereignty. However, he noted that maintaining the Bitcoin network requires ongoing work, including decentralization, vigilance, bug-fixing, updates, maintenance, and improvements in robustness, performance, privacy, scaling, documentation, and user experience.
Atack committed to continuing his efforts to enhance the decentralization and robustness of Bitcoin. He plans to focus on reviewing and context-packing proposals to help move projects forward and catch any potential breaking changes.
Maelstrom Bitcoin Grant Program
Maelstrom announced its grant program on July 17, aimed at advancing Bitcoin’s development. The program offers funding ranging from $50,000 to $150,000 on a 12-month basis, which can accumulate to $250,000 per developer.
Hayes highlighted the importance of supporting developers in maintaining the Bitcoin network, warning that the ecosystem could be vulnerable to threats without adequate funding.
