VanEck: Bitcoin Outperforms Most Asset Classes Over the Past Year

Bitcoin’s Dominance in Asset Performance Over the Past Year

Bitcoin’s Market Performance

Bitcoin (BTC) has outshined nearly all other asset classes over the last 12 months, as highlighted in a report from asset manager VanEck. Despite a recent market dip that has caused some concern among investors, the overall trend remains positive. Since September 2023, spot BTC prices have surged by approximately 124%.

As of September 20, 2024, Bitcoin’s market capitalization stands at roughly $1.25 trillion, representing 56% of the total cryptocurrency market. This marks a 15% increase from the previous year.

Drivers of Bitcoin’s Bull Market

VanEck believes that Bitcoin’s long-term bull market will persist. The report points out that the factors driving Bitcoin’s adoption as an investment vehicle have evolved. Unlike in 2023, when retail investors were the primary drivers of Bitcoin adoption, today’s market is influenced by different elements.

In 2023, the popularity of “inscriptions,” a viral innovation that allowed users to store media files directly on the Bitcoin blockchain, played a significant role in boosting retail interest. However, the appeal of inscriptions has waned in 2024, leading to a 52% year-over-year drop in transaction fees on the Bitcoin network.

Institutional Adoption and Regulatory Influence

The report also credits Bitcoin’s price appreciation this year to its growing acceptance as a means of storing and transferring value. In January, U.S. regulators approved the listing of spot BTC exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which now hold around $55 billion in net assets. According to Morningstar, wealth advisers have embraced BTC ETFs more rapidly than any other new ETF in history.

The Impact of Mega-Themes

According to Matthew Sigel, VanEck’s head of digital assets research, Bitcoin’s long-term growth is fueled by several enduring mega-themes. These include:

  • The increasing need for decentralized, censorship-resistant networks
  • The rising institutional adoption
  • Greater sovereign involvement in mining and cross-border trade

Challenges Faced by Bitcoin Miners

While Bitcoin itself has thrived, Bitcoin miners have faced significant challenges over the past year. The April 2024 “halving” event, which cut mining rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC per block, has heavily impacted miners. This periodic reduction in mining rewards happens every four years and is a fundamental aspect of Bitcoin’s design.

As a result, the profitability of Bitcoin mining has plummeted. The Bitcoin Hashprice, which measures the revenue earned for each one trillion cryptographic hash calculations per second, has dropped by 97% year-over-year, according to VanEck.

Conclusion: The Future of Bitcoin

VanEck remains optimistic about Bitcoin’s future, citing its robust market performance and growing institutional adoption. However, the challenges faced by Bitcoin miners highlight the complexities of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. As Bitcoin continues to evolve, it will be crucial to monitor both its market performance and the broader factors influencing its adoption and use.
