Securitize Integrates Wormhole for Multi-Chain RWA Tokens
Enhancing Cross-Chain Transferability for Real-World Assets
Securitize, a platform specializing in tokenization, has recently integrated Wormhole, a cross-chain communication protocol, to improve the transferability of real-world assets (RWAs) on its platform. This integration aims to make it easier to transfer these assets across different blockchain networks, a critical feature for encouraging institutional adoption.
RWAs are becoming increasingly popular in the cryptocurrency market. These assets can include tokenized claims on financial instruments, commodities, or even pieces of art. However, the current limitations on transferring these assets between different blockchain networks and wallets have been a significant barrier to their wider adoption.
Carlos Domingo, the CEO of Securitize, emphasized the importance of this development. “Tokenized securities need to thrive on public, permissionless blockchains to unlock the potential of blockchain technology,” he stated.
The integration is expected to facilitate faster and cheaper transactions, enabling sub-second and sub-penny transactions. This advancement is seen as a crucial step in fostering a robust cross-chain ecosystem for RWAs.
The Growing Market for Tokenized RWAs
The market for tokenized RWAs is substantial, with an estimated value of around $12 billion. Securitize has already onboarded approximately $1 billion into these assets. This market represents a significant global opportunity, potentially reaching up to $30 trillion.
Securitize offers RWA tokenization services to several institutional investment managers, including prominent names like BlackRock, Hamilton Lane InvestCorp, and KKR. The company is registered with U.S. regulators as a broker-dealer, transfer agent, and alternative trading system (ATS).
The largest tokenized investment funds by assets under management (AUM) include BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund and Franklin OnChain U.S. Government Money Fund, with AUM of approximately $520 million and $430 million, respectively.
Wormhole’s Role in Cross-Chain Communication
Wormhole is a blockchain protocol designed to send and verify messages, such as data on token transfers, across various blockchain networks. It connects nearly 30 networks, including Ethereum, Avalanche, and Solana.
Ethereum currently dominates the RWA market in terms of total value locked (TVL), with approximately $9 billion. However, issuers are expanding to other chains, with plans to launch tokenized funds on Solana.
Robinson Burkey, Chief Commercial Officer of the Wormhole Foundation, noted that the smoother cross-chain integration enabled by Wormhole “has set the stage for increased institutional adoption of tokenized assets.”
Institutional Moves Toward RWAs
The integration of cross-chain capabilities is not limited to Securitize. On September 18, WisdomTree launched an RWA platform that aims to allow users to access RWA tokens from any wallet or blockchain network. Similarly, Franklin Templeton has plans to expand its RWA offerings to other blockchains.
These developments indicate a growing interest among institutional investors in the RWA market. The ability to transfer these assets seamlessly across different blockchain networks is seen as a crucial factor in driving further adoption.
The Future of Tokenized RWAs
The integration of Wormhole into the Securitize platform is a significant step toward realizing the full potential of tokenized RWAs. By enabling faster, cheaper, and more efficient transactions, this development is expected to attract more institutional investors to the market.
As the market for tokenized RWAs continues to grow, the ability to transfer these assets across multiple blockchain networks will become increasingly important. The collaboration between Securitize and Wormhole is a promising development in this direction, setting the stage for broader institutional adoption and a more robust cross-chain ecosystem.
