Louisiana has embraced cryptocurrency by allowing residents to pay for state services using digital currencies. The state recently processed its first crypto payment through the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, marking a significant milestone in government acceptance of digital assets.

Residents can now use Bitcoin (BTC), the Bitcoin Lightning Network, and the stablecoin USD Coin (USDC) to pay for various state services. Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming announced that this new payment option offers flexibility and freedom for citizens, while ensuring that the state still receives funds in US dollars. This conversion protects the state from the volatility and security concerns often associated with cryptocurrencies.

Republican State Representative Mark Wright has been a key advocate for the adoption of cryptocurrency in Louisiana. He established a digital assets working group in May 2022, which concluded that crypto could be a viable payment method. Wright also led a 2021 House resolution recognizing Bitcoin’s anonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, for contributions to economic security.
In June, Louisiana updated its legislation to ban the use of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) while setting guidelines for crypto miners and node operators. The state explicitly prohibited participation in CBDC tests and acceptance of such digital currencies, but left the door open for other forms of digital payments.
