Why Did Ethereum (ETH) Price Surge Today? Find Out!

Why is Ethereum (ETH) Price Up Today?

Ethereum has seen a significant price increase this week. It’s up by 11%—the biggest gain in the third quarter. This surge has pushed the price above a key trendline, indicating a potential shift towards a bullish trend.

Factors Behind Ethereum’s Rally

The rally in Ether, along with other cryptocurrencies, began after the U.S. announced a 50 basis point rate cut. This move signaled the start of a global interest rate easing cycle, which has been favorable for crypto assets.

Increase in Open Interest

Ethereum’s open interest (OI)—the total number of outstanding derivative contracts—has risen by over $1 billion in less than a week, reaching $11.74 billion. This is the first time since early August that OI has been this high.

The rise in OI suggests that futures traders are returning to Ethereum, aiming to benefit from its potential gains. The derivatives market is playing a critical role in this current rally, with funding rates surging over the past four days. This increase in funding rates indicates that more traders are betting long on Ethereum.

Ethereum’s DeFi Activity and TVL

Ethereum’s decentralized finance (DeFi) activity had a downturn in the third quarter, dropping to $42 billion from a peak of $60.5 billion in June. However, the total value locked (TVL) in DeFi projects on Ethereum has shown a strong recovery. Over the past 48 hours, TVL increased by almost $4 billion, reaching $48.33 billion.

Technical Analysis and Future Price Targets

From a technical standpoint, independent analyst Kingpin Crypto believes that Ethereum’s market structure is promising. Although Ethereum’s year-to-date returns were flat for a while, the analyst notes that the price is now testing a strong demand area.

In the last 24 hours, Ethereum broke a descending resistance trendline, closing above $2,464. This breakout indicates a bullish trend shift, known as a break of structure (BOS). Following this BOS, Ethereum also surpassed the 200-day exponential moving average (EMA), further validating the upward trend.

The immediate target for Ethereum is now $2,800. However, any potential pullback could take the price to around $2,400, which aligns with the Fibonacci range of 0.50-0.618.

Conclusion

Ethereum’s strong performance this week is driven by several factors, including macroeconomic changes, increased open interest, and positive technical indicators. While the immediate target is set at $2,800, traders should be cautious of potential pullbacks. As always, every investment carries risk, and thorough research is advised before making any trading decisions.
