Today’s Crypto Market Surge: Reasons Behind the Rise

Crypto Market Surge Today

The crypto market has seen a significant rise today, driven by positive performances in the US equities markets and traders’ expectations of a potential interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve.

Impact of US Equities on Crypto Market

The S&P 500’s recent surge to a new all-time high of 5,670.81 has contributed to the bullish sentiment in the crypto market. The index is up about 20% in 2024, reflecting increased valuations of major companies listed on US stock exchanges. This positive momentum has spilled over into the crypto space, pushing the total market capitalization up by approximately 4% in the last 24 hours to reach $2.1 trillion. Notably, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) have posted gains of around 5% and 3.4%, respectively.

Federal Reserve’s Rate Cut Speculation

Market participants are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for today and tomorrow. The anticipation of a rate cut by the Federal Reserve has fueled optimism. The central bank is expected to initiate a series of rate cuts, starting with a potential 0.5% cut. According to CME Group’s FedWatch Tool, there is a 65% probability of a 0.5% rate cut, compared to a 35% chance of a 0.25% cut.

Spot Bitcoin ETF Inflows

The market recovery also reflects growing bullish sentiment among spot Bitcoin ETF traders and investors. Recently, US-based spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net inflows of $403 million for the week ending September 13. This trend continued with an additional $12.8 million in inflows on September 16, bringing the total net ETF reserves to $17.3 billion. These inflows have coincided with a wave of short liquidations in the derivatives markets over the last 24 hours. Data from Coinglass shows short traders experienced $78.94 million in liquidations, while long traders saw $44.45 million in liquidations.

Technical Analysis and Market Structure

From a technical perspective, the crypto market appears to be trading within a double-bottom channel pattern, suggesting the potential for continued bullish price action. The market cap fell below $1.7 trillion on August 5, then sharply recovered to $2.24 trillion, and subsequently returned to $1.81 trillion on September 6. If this pattern holds, the market cap could rebound towards $2.42 trillion. However, caution is advised when trading double-bottom setups, as they carry a failure risk of approximately 21.45%, according to Samurai Trading Academy.

In summary, the crypto market’s upward movement today is supported by a combination of strong US equities performance, expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut, and significant inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs. These factors, along with a favorable technical market structure, suggest potential for further gains.
