Bhutan Holds Double the Bitcoin of El Salvador, Reports Arkham

Bhutan’s Bitcoin Holdings Surpass El Salvador’s

The Kingdom of Bhutan, a small South Asian country, has emerged as a significant player in the cryptocurrency world. Recent reports reveal that Bhutan’s investment arm, Druk Holdings, possesses over 13,000 BTC. This amount is more than double the Bitcoin holdings of El Salvador, a country well-known for its Bitcoin investments.

Bhutan’s Bitcoin and Crypto Assets

On September 16, Arkham Intelligence, a blockchain analytics platform, unveiled several Bitcoin addresses holding 13,029 BTC, valued at approximately $758 million. These holdings belong to Druk Holdings, Bhutan’s investment firm. Bhutan’s crypto portfolio also includes 656 ETH, worth around $1.5 million, along with smaller amounts of BNB and Polygon (MATIC).

Verification of Holdings

Arkham Intelligence confirmed the timeline of Bitcoin mining activities in Bhutan by cross-referencing onchain data with satellite imagery of the facility construction. Bhutanese officials had previously acknowledged that Bitcoin mining using hydroelectric power began in April 2019, when Bitcoin was priced around $5,000.

Economic Impact

Bhutan’s GDP is projected to reach $3 billion by the end of 2024. Therefore, its Bitcoin holdings represent roughly a quarter of its GDP, highlighting the significant impact of cryptocurrency on the nation’s economy.

Mining Operations and Partnerships

In May 2023, Druk Holdings partnered with Bitdeer to develop carbon-neutral mining operations. By April 2024, they announced plans to increase Bhutan’s mining capacity by 500 megawatts by mid-2025, bringing the total capacity to 600MW.

Comparison with El Salvador

El Salvador began its Bitcoin acquisitions in September 2021, when Bitcoin was trading at $51,700. The country currently holds 5,875 BTC, valued at $331 million, which is about 45% of Bhutan’s holdings. El Salvador’s Bitcoin purchases were made at an average price of $43,900, resulting in an aggregate profit of 32.6%.

Renewable Energy Usage

Both Bhutan and El Salvador employ renewable energy for their Bitcoin mining operations. While Bhutan uses hydroelectric power, El Salvador utilizes geothermal volcanic energy.

Future Prospects

Bhutan’s significant investment in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, coupled with its renewable energy initiatives, positions it as a forward-thinking player in the global crypto landscape. As both Bhutan and El Salvador continue to expand their Bitcoin mining capabilities, their strategies and outcomes will be closely watched by the global community.

Conclusion

Bhutan’s strategic moves in the cryptocurrency space, particularly its substantial Bitcoin holdings, underscore the growing importance of digital assets in national economies. The comparison with El Salvador highlights different approaches and outcomes, offering valuable insights into the evolving world of cryptocurrency investments. As Bhutan continues to enhance its mining operations, its role in the global crypto market is set to expand further.
