Guarding Against 51% Attacks
A significant part of Buterin’s address focused on the role of solo stakers in defending against 51% attacks, where a malicious entity gains control over the majority of the blockchain’s computing power. He explained that if an attacker controls between 50-56% of the network, it poses a threat. However, if the control exceeds 57%, the attacker could finalize blocks and potentially cause a chain split.
To mitigate this risk, Buterin proposed increasing the block finality threshold from two-thirds to a higher number, such as three-quarters. This change would make it more challenging for an attacker to gain control and execute an attack.
Support for Google’s Automated Sign-In
Buterin also expressed support for Google’s automatic sign-in feature on social media. While acknowledging the risks associated with such services as entry points to secure systems, he suggested that it might be worth the potential benefits. He proposed a security model involving a “signing key” and an “M-of-N guardian setup” similar to a multisig, to protect access to sensitive data or assets.
