Ethereum Developers Consider Splitting Pectra Upgrade, Eye February Target
Splitting the Pectra Upgrade
Ethereum developers are contemplating splitting the anticipated Pectra upgrade to enhance the network’s efficiency and scalability. The current plan suggests initiating the first phase by early 2025.
Developers Eye February Deadline
During Ethereum’s execution layer meeting on September 12, developers expressed that a February deadline feels realistic if the upgrade is split. The goal is to ship the first part of Pectra as soon as possible to avoid delays. Some developers believe splitting the fork makes sense only if it ensures a delivery in the first quarter of 2025.
Concerns Over Delays
EF Researcher Ansgar Dietrichs mentioned that a delay beyond June 2025 for the first part would be considered a failure. He emphasized the importance of delivering the split upgrade promptly to avoid setbacks.
Prague and Electra Upgrades
Pectra combines two separate upgrades: Prague and Electra. The Prague upgrade focuses on changes to the network’s execution layer, while Electra impacts the consensus layer. Splitting the upgrade into two parts may reduce risks, as smaller forks are generally safer.
Complexity and Scope
Galaxy crypto researcher Christine Kim highlighted the high likelihood of splitting due to the complexity of the current Pectra fork. If developers decide to split it across two hard forks, the scope of the upgrade could change drastically. This decision will be discussed further in the next Ethereum All Core Developers (ACD) call on September 19.
Industry Optimism
The industry shows optimism for the Pectra upgrade. Ethereum educator Sassal and others believe it could be the largest upgrade in Ethereum’s history. The approval of Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 3074, which allows normal crypto wallets to function like smart contracts, is part of this upgrade, adding to the anticipation.
Conclusion
The decision to split the Pectra upgrade aims to ensure timely delivery and reduce risks. Developers are working towards a February target for the first phase, with further discussions planned to finalize the approach. The Ethereum community remains optimistic about the potential impact of this significant upgrade.
