FBI Reports on Cryptocurrency Fraud Losses

The FBI’s latest report reveals that Americans lost a staggering $5.6 billion to cryptocurrency fraud in 2023. This represents a 45% increase from the previous year. The report highlights that while crypto-related complaints made up 10% of all complaints, they accounted for nearly 50% of the total losses. Notably, individuals over the age of 60 were the most affected, losing close to $1.6 billion. Investment schemes were the primary culprits, responsible for 71% of the fraud, followed by call center fraud and government impersonation scams.

The FBI advises extreme caution when dealing with investment opportunities from individuals you have never met in person, stressing that scammers rarely agree to meet in real life.

Crypto as a US Election Issue

For the first time, cryptocurrencies are set to become a significant topic in the upcoming United States presidential election. A survey by Gemini, a crypto exchange founded by the Winklevoss twins, reveals that 73% of U.S. crypto owners will consider a candidate’s stance on crypto regulations when voting. Conducted between May and June 2024, the survey sampled 6,000 adults from five countries, including the U.S.

The findings show that 37% of respondents believe a candidate’s position on crypto will significantly impact their vote. This underscores the growing importance of crypto regulation in the political landscape.

Caroline Ellison’s Legal Team Seeks Leniency

Caroline Ellison, former CEO of Alameda Research, is seeking a lenient sentence after pleading guilty to seven felony counts related to the collapse of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. In a filing submitted on September 10, Ellison’s lawyers recommend a sentence of time served and three years of supervised release. They argue that Ellison’s cooperation with the government, her unblemished record, and numerous testimonials about her honesty and ethical behavior justify leniency.

The legal team emphasizes that Ellison poses no risk of recidivism and presents no threat to public safety, advocating for a non-custodial sentence.

Vitalik Buterin’s Stand on Layer-2 Solutions

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has reiterated his commitment to layer-2 decentralization. He announced that starting next year, he will only recognize layer-2 networks that meet “stage 1” of his decentralization scale. In a September 12 post, Buterin declared that there would be no exceptions, even for projects he has invested in or for those led by friends.

Buterin highlighted that many zero-knowledge rollup teams are on track to achieve “stage 1” by the end of the year, signaling a shift towards more decentralized and secure scaling solutions.

Bitcoin ETFs as Targets for North Korean Hackers

North Korean hackers, including the notorious Lazarus Group, are expected to target Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States. The Lazarus Group has a history of major cryptocurrency hacks, including the $625 million Ronin bridge hack. Michael Pearl, vice president of GTM strategy at Cyvers, warns that the sizable potential payout makes Bitcoin ETFs an attractive target.

Pearl notes that the FBI has already issued warnings about North Korean hackers planning to steal funds from ETFs. He emphasizes that these ETFs store significant amounts of Bitcoin, making them lucrative targets for cybercriminals.
