Ethereum Support for Decentralized Bitcoin Custody Now Available on Nomic

Nomic Introduces Ethereum Support for Decentralized Bitcoin Custody

Nomic, a layer-1 blockchain, is now supporting Ethereum through its decentralized Bitcoin custody system. This initiative, launched on a testnet on September 12, will allow users to transfer Bitcoin to and from Ethereum without relying on a centralized custodian.

nBTC: A New Alternative to Wrapped Bitcoin

Nomic’s native token, nBTC, offers a decentralized alternative to Wrapped Bitcoin (wBTC). Unlike wBTC, which is managed by custodians who hold Bitcoin reserves, nBTC operates on a trust-minimized model. This means users can use Bitcoin within decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems without the need for a centralized entity.

Streamlining Bitcoin DeFi

According to Matt Bell, CEO of Turbofish and core contributor to Nomic, Bitcoin is the most valuable crypto asset, while Ethereum boasts the most valuable DeFi ecosystem. Bell emphasizes the need to move beyond current, centralized Bitcoin-to-Ethereum solutions to fully integrate Bitcoin into DeFi.

Nomic’s nBTC can be traded for Bitcoin, backed by Nomic’s decentralized reserves. As part of the Cosmos ecosystem, nBTC can be transferred across Cosmos or any chain compatible with the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol.

Limited Options for Bitcoin DeFi

Before nBTC, the main alternatives to wBTC were limited. The Keep network originally issued tBTC, which used multiparty computation to distribute security data among signers. However, Keep and NuCypher merged to form Threshold in 2022.

In August, BitGo announced it was moving wBTC custody to a joint venture with BiT Global, maintaining its multisignature security. This decision was controversial due to the involvement of Justin Sun.

Threshold later proposed shifting wBTC’s centralized custody model to a more decentralized mint and redeem mechanism, akin to tBTC. This proposal would give Threshold control over wBTC.

Another former alternative, renBTC, was managed by Alameda Research. However, the platform shut down following the collapse of FTX.

Conclusion

Nomic’s integration of Ethereum support for decentralized Bitcoin custody represents a significant step forward in the DeFi space. By eliminating the need for centralized custodians, nBTC offers a more secure and efficient way to use Bitcoin within Ethereum and other EVM-based chains. As the DeFi landscape continues to evolve, innovations like nBTC will play a crucial role in enhancing the interoperability and security of digital assets.
