Nomic Introduces Ethereum Support for Decentralized Bitcoin Custody
Simplifying BTC in DeFi with nBTC
Nomic, a layer-1 blockchain, has launched Ethereum support for its decentralized Bitcoin custody engine. This testnet, introduced on September 12, enables users to move Bitcoin (BTC) on and off Ethereum without relying on third-party custodians. This new feature allows Nomic’s native nBTC to be used as an alternative to Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), eliminating the need for centralized reserves.
Trust-Minimized Bitcoin Integration
nBTC offers a trust-minimized way to integrate Bitcoin into decentralized finance (DeFi). It is designed to work seamlessly on Ethereum and potentially on other Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-based chains in the future. Matt Bell, CEO of Turbofish and a core contributor to Nomic, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “Bitcoin is the highest-value crypto asset, and Ethereum is the highest-value DeFi ecosystem. It’s time to move beyond the current centralized and clunky BTC-on-Ethereum offerings and start truly bringing Bitcoin into DeFi.”
Bitcoin can now be converted into nBTC, backed by Nomic’s decentralized BTC reserves. Nomic is part of the Cosmos ecosystem, which means nBTC can be moved across Cosmos or any chain compatible with Cosmos’ Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol.
Alternatives to Centralized BTC Solutions
Prior to nBTC, options for using Bitcoin in DeFi were limited. The main alternative was tBTC, originally issued by the Keep network, which secured data through multiparty computation. Keep and NuCypher later merged to form Threshold in 2022.
BitGo, a major player in the space, announced in August that it was transferring the custody of WBTC to a joint venture with BiT Global. This decision was controversial due to Justin Sun’s involvement in the partnership. Shortly after, Threshold proposed a change to WBTC’s custody model, suggesting a switch to a permissionless mint and redeem mechanism similar to tBTC. This proposal aimed to give Threshold control over WBTC.
Another alternative, renBTC, was issued by a platform managed by Alameda Research. However, this option became unavailable after the collapse of FTX.
Future Prospects for nBTC
The introduction of nBTC marks a significant step in reducing the reliance on centralized solutions for integrating Bitcoin into DeFi. By offering a decentralized alternative, Nomic aims to streamline the use of Bitcoin across various blockchain ecosystems, enhancing both security and efficiency.
As Nomic continues to develop and expand its services, the potential for nBTC to be integrated into other EVM-based chains remains a promising prospect. This development not only simplifies the process of using Bitcoin in DeFi but also paves the way for more decentralized and trust-minimized solutions in the future.
