Cross-Platform Authentication with World ID
Worldcoin has announced that its World ID can now be integrated seamlessly with the Solana blockchain, thanks to a new cross-chain protocol developed by the Wormhole Foundation. This development was completed just two and a half months after Wormhole was awarded a Worldcoin Wave 1 Community Grant.
World ID operates on Worldcoin’s layer-2 Ethereum chain, known as World Chain. It serves as a privacy-enabled human verification service, designed to allow secure and authenticated logins to decentralized applications (DApps) and other services without revealing personal user details.
With this integration, developers working on the Solana network can now easily incorporate World ID authentication into their DApps. Additionally, they can benefit from cross-chain compatibility with services on the Ethereum chain.
Robinson Burkey, co-founder of the Wormhole Foundation, stated, “Bringing World ID to Solana is a big step forward for identity verification. With the integration of World ID and Wormhole Queries, developers can now easily build applications that prioritize real users across chains, improving trust in decentralized ecosystems.”
Worldcoin Usage and Adoption
As of July 31, 2024, Worldcoin reported having 6,630,191 users. While it’s unclear how many of these users are active in the DApp economy using their World ID login, the number of Worldcoin users has shown steady growth since its launch on July 24, 2023.
Worldcoin has also been expanding its presence globally. Recently, it launched its services in Austria, making it the second European country to host Worldcoin services. Previously, Worldcoin operated in Spain but suspended its operations due to concerns over data privacy and age verification controls.
The adoption of Worldcoin has also ramped up in Southeast Asia. In August, the Malaysian government adopted World ID as its standard authentication service. This move was accompanied by a strategic partnership to expand manufacturing capacity for Worldcoin’s Orb identification hardware.
