Worldcoin’s World ID Expands with Solana Integration
On September 13, Worldcoin revealed its new integration of World ID with the Solana blockchain through a protocol developed by the Wormhole Foundation. This move marks a significant step in enhancing cross-chain compatibility and expanding the reach of Worldcoin’s privacy-focused human verification service.
Cross-Platform Authentication on Solana
World ID, built on Worldcoin’s layer-2 Ethereum chain known as World Chain, aims to provide secure and authenticated logins to decentralized applications (DApps) without exposing personal user information. With the integration of Wormhole’s cross-chain protocol, developers on the Solana network can now easily incorporate World ID into their DApps. This not only simplifies the authentication process but also ensures compatibility with services on the Ethereum chain.
Robinson Burkey, co-founder of the Wormhole Foundation, commented on the integration’s significance, stating, “Bringing World ID to Solana is a big step forward for identity verification. With the integration of World ID and Wormhole Queries, developers can now easily build applications that prioritize real users across chains, improving trust in decentralized ecosystems.”
Growth and Usage of Worldcoin
As of July 31, 2024, Worldcoin reported having 6,630,191 users. While the exact number of users participating in the DApp economy via their World ID login remains unclear, the platform has shown steady growth since its launch on July 24, 2023.
Worldcoin recently expanded its services to Austria, making it the second European country to adopt its digital identity solutions. Previously, the company had to suspend operations in Spain due to concerns over data privacy and age verification controls.
In addition to its European expansion, Worldcoin has seen increased adoption in Southeast Asia. In August, the Malaysian government adopted World ID as its standard authentication service, alongside a strategic partnership aimed at expanding the manufacturing capacity for Worldcoin’s Orb identification hardware.
