Crypto Scammers Use Deepfake of Apple CEO Tim Cook in iPhone 16 Livestream Scam

Crypto Scammers Use Deepfake of Apple CEO Tim Cook During iPhone 16 Livestream

Deepfake Scam Targets Apple Event

On September 9, Apple’s highly anticipated “Glowtime” event unveiled the new iPhone 16 models. However, among the genuine livestreams, YouTube was plagued by fake streams featuring a deepfake of Apple CEO Tim Cook. This artificial intelligence-generated video urged viewers to send cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Tether (USDT), or Dogecoin (DOGE) to a provided wallet address, promising to return double the amount. This tactic is a well-known “double-your-money” scam where victims never receive their crypto back.

The Fake Livestreams

These scam streams were broadcasted on channels designed to look like official Apple accounts, complete with verification ticks to appear legitimate. Some of these streams amassed hundreds of thousands of views, although many of these views were likely inflated by bots to give the streams an aura of credibility. One particular stream showcased a deepfake of Tim Cook instructing viewers that once they made a deposit, the system would automatically double their cryptocurrency and return it.

YouTube’s Response

YouTube quickly responded to the scam. On the same day, the YouTube support team acknowledged the issue via a post on X (formerly Twitter), urging users to report the fraudulent videos using their official reporting tool. The fake videos were subsequently removed, and the associated accounts were shut down.

Growing Boldness of Deepfake Scams

The use of deepfakes in scams is not a new phenomenon but is becoming increasingly sophisticated and bold. High-profile individuals and events are frequent targets. In June, major Australian broadcaster Seven’s YouTube channel was hijacked by crypto scammers who used a deepfake of Elon Musk to promote a similar scam. This coincided with the launch of SpaceX’s Starship rocket, further exploiting the event’s visibility to lure victims.

Rising Concerns Over AI-Generated Content

The increasing capabilities of artificial intelligence in generating realistic deepfakes are raising significant concerns. The World Economic Forum’s 2024 “Global Risks Report” highlighted various adverse outcomes of AI technologies, including their potential misuse in fraudulent activities.

Conclusion

As AI technology continues to advance, the risks associated with deepfakes grow. It is crucial for platforms like YouTube to remain vigilant and for users to be skeptical of too-good-to-be-true offers, especially involving cryptocurrency. Enhanced reporting tools, user education, and perhaps regulatory measures will be necessary to combat this evolving threat.
