Wealth Advisers Rapidly Embrace Bitcoin ETFs
Wealth Advisers and Bitcoin ETFs: A Historic Uptake
Financial wealth advisers are showing unprecedented interest in Bitcoin (BTC) exchange-traded funds (ETFs). According to Matt Hougan, Chief Investment Officer of Bitwise, this adoption rate is faster than any other ETF in history. This statement was made in response to investment researcher Jim Bianco, who had suggested that approximately 85% of Bitcoin ETF uptake is not from traditional financial institutions (tradfi).
BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF Leads the Way
The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) from BlackRock has attracted $1.45 billion in net flows from wealth advisers. While Bianco pointed out that this is small compared to the $46 billion total that has flowed into Bitcoin ETFs, Hougan argued that the rate of adoption among investment advisers is still historically significant.
The Role of Wealth Advisers in Bitcoin ETF Adoption
Wealth advisers, including independent registered investment advisers (RIAs) and large firms like Morgan Stanley, play a crucial role in the U.S. cryptocurrency ETF market. Federico Brokate of 21Shares noted that wealth advisers control up to 50% of ETF inflows, making their participation vital for the growth of Bitcoin ETFs.
Market Trends and Challenges
Despite recent net outflows of $1.2 billion from U.S.-based spot BTC ETFs due to poor price performance, the long-term trend shows continued adoption. For example, Morgan Stanley has authorized its 15,000 financial advisers to recommend BTC ETFs, reflecting a broader acceptance within the industry.
Barriers to Wider Adoption
However, significant barriers remain. Research by Cerulli Associates indicates that 55% of RIAs have no intention of discussing cryptocurrency investments with clients, and only 2.6% actively recommend crypto. Yet, if we consider only the $1.45 billion linked to investment advisers, IBIT would still be the second fastest-growing ETF of the year.
Conclusion: A Mixed Yet Promising Landscape
While the adoption of Bitcoin ETFs by wealth advisers is historically fast, the overall market faces challenges. The participation of major financial advisers and firms like Morgan Stanley suggests a promising future, but significant resistance and market volatility continue to impact growth.
