Arthur Hayes Predicts Bitcoin Drop Below $50K

Market Sentiment: Extreme Fear

The crypto market has plunged into “extreme fear” as Bitcoin took a nosedive below $56,000. Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, believes Bitcoin could drop another 12% to fall under $50,000. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index hit a score of 22 on September 6, marking a significant drop from the previous day’s score of 29. This is the lowest sentiment score since August 8, when the index hit 20.

Bitcoin’s price dropped 2.7% in the past 24 hours, reaching a low of $55,838, resulting in a $29.7 billion loss in market capitalization. Although it has slightly recovered to trade at $56,533, Hayes remains bearish. “BTC is heavy,” he said in a September 6 post. “I’m gunning for sub $50k this weekend. I took a cheeky short.”

Pavel Durov Speaks Out After Arrest

Telegram Founder Reacts to French Authorities

Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, has finally spoken out after his arrest in France in August. In a message on his Telegram channel, Durov expressed surprise over the arrest, stating that Telegram has an official representative in the EU to handle regulatory and law enforcement inquiries. Durov, who holds French citizenship, said the authorities had multiple avenues to reach him without resorting to arrest. He also mentioned that Telegram is ready to leave jurisdictions that conflict with its mission of free speech and expression.

“We are prepared to leave markets that aren’t compatible with our principles because we are not doing this for money. We are driven by the intention to bring good and defend the basic rights of people, particularly in places where these rights are violated,” Durov said.

This ban is part of Zhao’s plea deal with U.S. prosecutors, although it wasn’t explicitly required by the plea agreements.

CFTC Charges Uniswap for Illegal Trading

Uniswap Labs Faces Legal Action

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has charged Uniswap Labs with illegally offering leveraged cryptocurrency trading to U.S. retail investors. Uniswap Labs agreed to settle the charges by paying a $175,000 civil penalty and ceasing violations of the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA). Ian McGinley, the CFTC’s director of enforcement, stated that the agency would vigorously enforce the CEA as digital asset platforms and DeFi ecosystems evolve. However, CFTC Commissioner Summer Mersinger criticized the agency’s approach, calling for clearer guidance on how DeFi protocols can comply with regulations.

New Exchange by Former Mt. Gox CEO

Mark Karpeles Introduces EllipX

Mark Karpeles, the former CEO of the defunct Mt. Gox exchange, is set to launch a new crypto exchange called EllipX in September. Based in Poland, EllipX will initially serve European users with plans for global expansion. The platform will start as crypto-only but may add banking and fiat currency services later. EllipX aims to comply with the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation and will promote transparency through regular third-party audits.

Karpeles explained that the security and technology around Bitcoin now allow for safe storage of cryptocurrencies. “Exchanges didn’t change much over the years. I think the best way would be to lead by example, to show that connection can be built in a fully transparent way,” he said. EllipX will offer former Mt. Gox users at least 50% off trading fees as a gesture to regain trust.
