Arthur Hayes’ Bitcoin Prediction, Mt. Gox CEO’s New Exchange: Hodler’s Digest, Sept. 1-7

Arthur Hayes’ Bitcoin Prediction and Market Sentiment

Bitcoin’s market sentiment has taken a hit, plunging into “extreme fear” territory. This was evident when Bitcoin briefly fell below $56,000. Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, believes that Bitcoin could drop another 12%, potentially dipping below $50,000 over the weekend. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, which gauges market sentiment, hit a low score of 22 on Sept. 6, marking a significant drop from the previous day.

The last time the index showed such low sentiment was on Aug. 8, when it hit 20. Despite a slight recovery to $56,533, Bitcoin’s market cap still saw a substantial dip, wiping out $29.7 billion. Hayes, in a recent post, stated, “BTC is heavy. I’m gunning for sub $50k this weekend. I took a cheeky short.”

Pavel Durov’s Arrest and Statements

Telegram founder Pavel Durov broke his silence following his arrest in France in August. In a message on his Telegram channel, Durov expressed surprise at his arrest, noting that Telegram has an official EU representative to handle regulatory requests. He emphasized that his company is prepared to leave jurisdictions hostile to its mission of free speech.

Durov, a French citizen, mentioned that the French authorities had multiple ways to contact him without arresting him. He highlighted that he had been a regular guest at the French Consulate in Dubai and criticized the arrest as unnecessary.

Binance CEO’s Legal Troubles

Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, CEO of Binance, is facing a lifetime ban from managing or operating the crypto exchange as part of his plea deal with U.S. prosecutors. Although initially reported as a three-year ban, sources confirm that it is indeed a lifetime prohibition. This news comes as CZ is expected to be released from prison in a few weeks.

Richard Teng, the current CEO of Binance, confirmed that CZ has been barred from any management role within the firm, although this condition was not explicitly mentioned in either Zhao’s or Binance’s plea agreements.

CFTC Charges Uniswap with Illegal Trading

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has charged Uniswap Labs with illegally offering leveraged cryptocurrency trading to U.S. retail investors. Uniswap has agreed to settle by paying a $175,000 civil penalty and ceasing any violations of the Commodity Exchange Act.

Ian McGinley, the CFTC’s director of enforcement, emphasized that the agency would vigorously enforce the law as digital asset platforms evolve. However, one of the CFTC’s commissioners, Summer Mersinger, criticized the agency’s approach, calling it “regulation through enforcement.”

Mark Karpeles’ New Crypto Exchange

Mark Karpeles, the former CEO of the defunct Mt. Gox exchange, is set to launch a new crypto exchange called EllipX in Europe. Based in Poland, EllipX will initially serve European users with plans to expand globally. The platform aims to comply with the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation and will feature regular third-party audits for transparency.

Karpeles mentioned that the new exchange would offer former Mt. Gox users “at least 50%” off trading fees on EllipX, as part of efforts to regain trust and offer reparations to those affected by the Mt. Gox hack.
